Reporting to the Assistant Athletic Director of Broadcast Operations, the Director of Broadcast Engineering will:
Support all engineering needs of the production unit, on-air and online operations maintaining all services and deploying resources as needed to support all productions, live athletic events, broadcast, video display systems and online infrastructure. Define technological direction, recommend technological solutions to fulfill business problems
Manage IT, Network, Web, Broadcast, In Venue video display at all athletic venues, Stadium and Media Distribution systems from concept to production and support for all aspects of engineering and Information Technology activities within Intercollegiate Athletics Broadcasting.
Provide strategic and tactical planning, development, evaluation, and coordination of Engineering & Information Technology services as well as capital projects.
Lead, deploy and manage engineering personnel in all areas of infrastructure, services, applications, consulting and support.
Help to shape business stakeholder requirements and expectations by translating business requirements, negotiating service level quality and leveraging ongoing business stakeholder input to drive future improvements.
Collaborate with Assistant Athletic Director of Broadcast Operations and other members of the Leadership Team to define and accomplish the strategic and operational goals of Intercollegiate Athletics Broadcasting.
Develop relationships with UW faculty and staff to ensure the department is meeting the needs of the UW community.
Supervise all Broadcast Engineering staff full-time and part-time as well as the directing and supervising the work of contractors and service providers.
Coordinate Engineering & Information Technology units work with other partners/groups/functions.
Manage relationships and partnerships with vendors, independent contractors and third parties.

The Director of Broadcast Engineering is a crucial member of the ICA Broadcasting Leadership Team and plays a key consultative role in setting priorities and providing direction for the unit. Along with providing leadership to the ICA Broadcasting engineering team, the position will provide consulting and expertise to all internal stakeholders. The Director of Broadcast Engineering will help identify strategies that effectively position the University of Washington Intercollegiate Athletics to utilize and benefit from new and emerging video production and distribution technologies. These technologies have the capability to assist the department to strengthen its visibility and its reputation as a first-tier international research university and provide tools for research and teaching faculty to more effectively engage students and conduct research and outreach activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership, Management and Oversight:
Manages, maintains and services the broadcast systems, equipment procurement and maintenance consistent with applicable policies and procedures within all areas of broadcast, production and operations.
Performs work and/or deploys resources in support of B1G+, In house, and campus productions
Drives the definition of ICA Broadcasting technology strategy, service architecture and roadmap, including vendor/technology evaluation & selection and alignment with the athletic departments strategic priorities.
Facilitate intra- and inter-departmental collaboration and solution development.
Provide evaluation, selection, implementation and maintenance of information and media distribution systems, ensuring appropriate investment in strategic and operational systems.
Keep abreast of technology advancements, industry trends, development and support methodologies and best practices and apply them to the unit as appropriate.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with business stakeholders and gain their trust and respect.
Prioritize, approve, coordinate and lead projects related to selection, acquisition, development and installation of major Engineering and IT systems and services ensuring projects are delivered as specified, on time and on budget.
Manage day-to-day activities of internal staff, contracted staff and vendors to ensure alignment with strategic priorities.
Develop and maintain processes and procedures aimed at maximizing effectiveness and minimizing system costs.
Analyze financial impact of technical changes and implement sound cost-effective solutions.
Develop and enforce policies and procedures to support the protection of ICAs assets and the integrity, security and privacy of ICAs staff, partners and customers.
Implement and lead change management processes to ensure appropriate controls are in place to support system changes.
Collect and communicate key operational metrics.
Coordinate and manage reporting needs and data analysis as required to make decisions in a timely, accurate and cost effective manner

Facilitate the planning of organizational change initiatives and business readiness assessments as they pertain to ICAs technology and business capabilities.

Additional Roles:
May act as a Project Manager on projects and initiatives.
May act as Systems Architect on new or existing developments to systems and applications.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelors degree in electrical engineering, Computer Science, or related field required.
4-5 years of related experience.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.

DESIRED REQUIREMENTS
7+ years of broadcast engineering experience at a broadcast, video production or cable television facility performing hands on work on productions and live events.
3+ years of experience architecting and maintaining enterprise applications, services, operations and technology.
3+ years of experience managing technical staff and projects.
3+ years experience managing technical teams and projects.
Proven leadership in managing high-performance engineering teams, third-party vendor relationships, and budgets, with strategic planning and execution expertise.
In-depth knowledge of broadcast infrastructure, application architecture, and lifecycle management, with a focus on implementing operational growth and process improvements.
Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and change management skills, with the ability to balance shifting priorities and handle complex situations with professionalism and discretion.
Effective communication, analytical, and facilitation skills to drive team collaboration and deliver results in dynamic environments.
10 years of experience in television production and broadcast operations with increasing levels of responsibility.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated expertise with Microsoft Server, Active Directory, IIS, MS Exchange, SQL Server.
Deep knowledge in large volume database/storage systems.
