Base pay range $102,000.00/yr - $132,579.00/yr The City of Ann Arbor (pop. 119,381) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Communications Director to lead its citywide communications strategy and operations. This position offers a unique opportunity to enhance public confidence in local government, strengthen internal communications, and manage a talented team dedicated to telling the City’s story. The target hiring range is $102,000 - $132,579 DOQ/E and the ability to work in a hybrid environment. The Communication Director serves as the chief architect of internal and external communications, crisis messaging, digital platforms, and media relations and is also responsible for Ann Arbor’s award-winning Community Television Network (CTN ) and represents the city on the Cable Communications Commission. Reporting to the Deputy City Administrator and overseeing a team of 11 FTEs in the department, the Communications Director serves as member of the city’s executive leadership team and a key advisor to the City Administrator. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative, forward-thinking communications professional who thrives in a fast-paced, civic-minded environment. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Strategic thinker with a passion for civic engagement and public service. Skilled in analyzing data, developing communication metrics, and leveraging technology. Experienced in conflict resolution, issue management, and working in complex stakeholder environments. Effective leader and mentor with the ability to foster a culture of collaboration and excellence. Adept in budget planning, personnel supervision, and service delivery improvement. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in public relations, Journalism, Public Administration, or a related field (master’s preferred). 10 years of progressively responsible experience in mass media, public relations, communications, or broadcast management, including supervisory experience. Exceptional writing, speaking, and storytelling skills across multiple platforms. Experience working with government entities, emergency response, and union environments is a plus. Proven ability to manage digital communications, crisis messaging, and media relations. Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations concerning cable communications.
