Summer Research Assistant Position

The UNH ADAPT Agroforestry Project, led by Dr. Heidi Asbjornsen in partnership with an interdisciplinary team of researchers at UNH, Dartmouth and Yale, is seeking a Summer Research Assistant to support data collection and survey efforts across the New England region. The ADAPT projectPromoting Climate-Smart and Sustainable Agriculture in New England through Regionally Adapted Agroforestry Systemsencourages broad adoption of agroforestry practices in New England through research, education and extension. Agroforestry is the intentional integration of trees with crops and/or livestock. The project's work is focused specifically on three agroforestry practices: silvopasture, food forests, and forest farming.

Research Assistant will help with surveys and data collection at different types of supermarkets across the New England region. The job will involve talking to people, recording responses, and supporting research activities. Assistant will travel to various locations, some requiring overnight stays (about 2 to 3 days at a time), usually within 2 to 4 hours from Durham. This is a full-time summer position, ideal for a student interested in hands-on research related to natural resources, the environment, and economics. This position is not considered essential staff.

Duties/Responsibilities

Field Work (100%)

  • Conduct surveys across various locations throughout New England. Duties include traveling to different sites for data collection, engaging with participants, and supporting field-based research activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment as a current UNH undergraduate student

Required Licenses & Certifications:

  • Must have access to a reliable vehicle, a valid driver's license with a good driving record, and be willing to provide transportation for team member(s) to and from survey sites as needed

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Willing and able to travel (drive) across New England to conduct in-person surveys at supermarkets and in some instances, farmers markets
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage respectfully and professionally with a diverse range of individuals
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively within a small research team.
  • Highly reliable, detail-oriented, and committed to collecting accurate data and representing the project with integrity

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a program related to Natural Resources and the Environment or related field
  • Interest in economic sciences
  • Experience working on farms/land based production systems
  • Experience collecting field data for research
  • Comfortable talking to people and conducting surveys
